March 18-24 was the first ever International Anti-Street Harassment Week. Over 100 orgnizations in 80 countries created events aimed at stopping sexual harassment of women by men in public spaces.
We’ll begin the show with our Feminist News Segment followed by Amanda Marcotte’s podcast, then present a live interview with Holly Kearl, founder of Stop Street Harassment http://bit.ly/mOLFpy in Washington DC, who was the principal organizer of the international week of events.
We’ll then play recordings from the final rally of the week on March 24th at the Judson Memorial Church in New York City. Excerpts will include segments of young women (some in High School) telling stories of their daily experiences; members of local NYC groups such as Girls for Gender Equity http://www.gge.nyc.org and Hollaback http://www.ihollaback.org; voices of male allies, including those involved in Men Can Stop Rape http://bit.ly/CxupL; students in Ileana Jimenez‘ feminist High School Class http://bit.ly/AkySl0; the new new “viral” Youtube video “Shit Men Say to Men who Say Shit to Women on the Street,” a how-to for men stopping other men from harassing women, produced especially for the International Anti Street Harassment Week–and which has gotten 180,000 hits.
The Feminist News Segment will include stories on: Arizona’s new “pregnancy-begins-at-menstruation” law; Equal Pay Day; the results of “Welfare Reform;” the Saudi Government’s refusal to let Saudi women participate in the upcoming London Olympics. Plus music and Amanda Marcotte’s podcast-commentary on the latest Republican denials that they are conducting a “war on women.”
